Patterns of Care: A Seat at the Table Community Dinner

What does it look like to practice care within a community? Making sure our neighbors and loved ones are well-fed, supporting budding entrepreneurs with a dream, and cultivating a dynamic, inclusive, and welcoming gathering place are just a few of the ways we take care of one another in the Findlay Market community. In our brand new three-part event series, Patterns of Care, we are shining a spotlight on the myriad ways we care for one another at Findlay Market, and we are thrilled to invite you to our first event - A Seat at the Table on Friday, June 27 at 6 PM. 

A Seat at the Table is a free community dinner in the Farm Shed where we will gather, eat, and discuss how we can care for one another through food. Guests will enjoy a catered dinner from Findlay Market Merchants, hear from three members of our community on their commitment to care through food, and participate in reflective group discussions throughout the evening.

Our Quickbooks for Kitchens Workshop provides small food businesses with practical guidance on setting up bookkeeping software to effectively track and analyze their financial data. This class will be taught by Layla Wells, CPA, and will cover the following topics:

  • Setting Up Your Chart of Accounts

  • Tracking Start-up Costs & Putting Money Into Your Business

  • Integrating POS/Payroll Software

  • Generating and Analyzing a P&L

About Layla Wells:

Layla Wells is a CPA, QuickBooks Certified ProAdvisor, and Cincinnati native with a passion for supporting local entrepreneurs. She earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Accounting from the University of Georgia. She started her career in public accounting, where she built a strong foundation in tax, and now she works directly with small business owners in Cincinnati to help them set up and manage their financial systems with confidence. Her goal is to give entrepreneurs the tools and clarity they need to make smart, informed decisions and build thriving businesses.

Art & Poetry is our annual FREE celebration of the creative arts. Spend the day making art with friends, watch live performances throughout the day, and sign up to participate in the Poetry Slam.

  •  "Poetry in Asian Calligraphy". Creative Asian Society artists will demonstrate Chinese poetry and haiku written in Chinese and Japanese calligraphy. Visitors are invited to copy artists' works or compose their own poems or haiku using calligraphy brushes. 

Refresh Collective: 1 PM - 6 PM

  • Refresh Collective is thrilled to be a part of Findlay Market's Art and Poetry event! Refresh Collective exists to cultivate tomorrow's change-makers through self-expression and skill building rooted in hip-hop culture. Job training and music technology classes are just some of what we do! Stop by to learn more about our amazing programs, get some sweet merch, or even print your own tee! 

Indigo Hippo 1 PM - 6 PM

  • Make your own take home poetry collage with Indigo Hippo, inspired by fridge magnet poetry! Choose words that inspire you (cut from upcycled magazines) to create your own poem, and glue them on a card to create your collage postcard.

Women Writing for (a) Change 1 PM - 8 PM

  • Join Women Writing for (a) Change for a creative adventure—where we’ll blend collage and words to build a one-of-a-kind community poem together!

Trick or Treat at Findlay Market! Our Merchants dress up and pass out candy to any kiddo in costume. Findlay Market invites you to the best Trick-or-Treating in town. All families, school groups, and neighbors are welcome to join us from 4 - 6 PM on Halloween to trick-or-treat from our Market Merchants and partners. Kids will have the chance to get candy inside of the Market House and at our surrounding storefronts. All businesses passing out candy will be clearly marked so you know where to stop!

Enter your dog in our annual dog costume contest! Owners are encouraged to dress up with their pup. Dogs will be scored by three judges based on things like cuteness, cleverness, and ability to keep their costume on. Juneteenth Panel & Group Discussion

Join us for Findlay Market's 5th Annual Juneteenth Group & Panel Discussion in partnership with Black is Excellence. Following this year’s theme, We Rise, Heal and Overcome, panelists will discuss the ongoing work of building community, lifting each other up, and learning to heal in the face of continual adversity. 

This panel discussion is entirely free of charge, but seating is limited, so we kindly ask that you reserve your seat ahead of time.

Moderating this panel will be Deasa Dorsey, a Community Educator, Patient Advocate, and Visionary.

Deasa Dorsey is a Community Educator, Patient Advocate, and Visionary. She is the Visionary & Co-Founder of the Black Nurse Network. Deasa is also the Co-Director and Co-Producer of Breaking the Silence: A Black Nursing Documentary (2024).

As the Founder of iCan Health Inc, she empowers individuals to achieve their optimal health and authored The iCan Manual: My Simple Manual For Living With Diabetes. Deasa has 15 years of nursing experience and has received numerous honors, including a Black Is Excellence Honoree, the Onyx and Ruby Rising Star Award.

She is inspired by Ancestor Maya Angelou’s quote: "Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it."

This Year’s Panelists

Alandes Powell, Co-Founder, Black Art Speaks, Author

Though Alandes has an impressive background in finance, she is best known for her work as a community advocate.

Alandes was the visionary behind Cincinnati’s Black Lives Matter Mural, inspired by her poem, ”We Want What You Want”. She co-founded Black Art Speaks, an arts collective dedicated to amplifying Black voices through creative expression.

A passionate leader and changemaker, Alandes currently serves on the Rober O’Neal Multi-cultural Center and GenNow Board. She is also a published author, co-authoring ‘The Making of Cincinnati’s Black Lives Matter Mural’

Her impact has earned her numerous awards and accolades, including 2022 Black and Brown Leadership Honoree and 2018 Cincinnati Enq/Greater Cincinnati Foundation Woman of the Year.

Dr. Steven Kniffley, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Associate Professor, and Higher Education Administrator at the University of Cincinnati

Dr. Kniffley’s area of expertise is research and clinical work with Black males and the treatment of race-based stress and trauma.

Dr. Kniffley has written numerous books, and articles on Black Male mental health, Black males and the criminal justice system, racial trauma treatment and training, program evaluation, organizational diversity, and academic achievement.

He is currently the Vice-President for Diversity for the Ohio Psychological Association. Additionally, Dr. Kniffley has been selected as one of Louisville’s top 40 under 40 for 2020, and was the recipient of the 2020 MediStar Healthcare Advocacy Award, among many others. Most recently, Dr. Kniffley was inducted into the Black Psychologist Hall of Fame at Hampton University.

Dr. Kelli Beecher, Assistant Professor, University of Cincinnati’s College of Nursing; Licensed Family Nurse Practitioner

Dr. Kelli Beecher is an Assistant Professor within the University of Cincinnati’s College of Nursing and a licensed Family Nurse Practitioner in the state of Ohio. She is a mental health wellness coach and founder of Dr. Bee Well LLC, a company committed to nurturing and empowering individuals through holistic workshops and home fragrance that integrate mind, body, and spirit. Dr. Beecher also serves as the co-chair of the mentoring committee and co-leader of the Black Nurse Network, an organization that works to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in nursing schools and the nursing profession.

Norman D. Holloway, Success Via Chess

 As a proud husband and father, Norman Holloway reflects on his accomplishments with gratitude. He is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Organizational Leadership. His career as a paralibrarian at CHPL spanned 25 years.

Upon retiring in 2016, he transitioned his focus to mentoring young individuals through chess instruction. He currently serves as the program coordinator for the Chris Collinsworth ProScan Fund's Chess In School Program and manages SuccessViaChess. His personal story showcases resilience and a deep-seated commitment to empowering individuals and communities.

He is a strong believer in the idea that one’s purpose extends beyond individual aspirations. He continually strives for improvement, aiming to inspire others one mate at a time.

This class will be taught by Keith Eichelberger, Senior Small Business Consultant at Truist Bank. This class will be taught by Sean Mangan, a Professor of Practice at the University of Cincinnati College of Law, where he teaches transactional lawyering skills such as contract drafting, mergers and acquisitions, accounting and finance for lawyers, and client counseling. Sean is also the Director of UC Law’s Entrepreneurship and Community Development Clinic (ECDC), which provides free transactional legal services to small businesses, start-ups, and non-profit organizations within the Southwest Ohio region. Since its inception in 2011, ECDC has provided over $1.5 million in pro bono legal services to over 400 businesses in the Cincinnati entrepreneurial ecosystem. Prior to becoming an attorney, Sean served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps.

Help us celebrate Sen by Kiki as they expand into their new storefront! We are hosting a grand opening in their new space - 106 W Elder St, Cincinnati, OH 45202 - in the former Heist Fish & Poultry storefront on Tuesday, June 3 at 9 AM. 

Since opening at Findlay Market a few years ago, Sen by Kiki has been an excellent addition to the community. They offer fresh, sushi-grade seafood, oysters on the half shell, Asian pantry staples, and more. In their new space, they’ll be able to expand their offerings to bring you even more high-quality seafood, prepared food, and grocery items.
